1933 "Lives of Fair & Gallant Ladies" by Brantôme, Illustrated by Majeska
A beautifully bound antiquarian treasure from the Liveright Publishing Corporation, New York, dated 1933. This edition of the Seigneur De Brantôme's famous French Renaissance chronicle is dressed in black cloth boards with richly gilt Art Deco scrollwork trailing down the spine and a salmon-red spine label lettered in gold.
The front cover is crowned with a striking gilt medallion — a graceful nude figure among birds and grapevines — the handiwork of the illustrator Majeska. Translated from the original by A. R. Allinson with an introduction by Georg Harsdörfer, it is a decorative and literary classic in one. A tender handwritten gift inscription on the half-title, dated October 1984, adds a layer of personal history.
Perfect styled on a shelf, a coffee table, or a writing desk, this is a romantic little piece of early twentieth-century bookmaking for the collector or the decorator alike.
