Victorian James W. Tufts Sapphire Blue Glass Pickle Castor
An exceptional late 19th century Victorian pickle castor by the James W. Tufts Company, Pattern #2362, featuring a brilliant sapphire blue pressed glass insert held within an elaborate silver-plated frame.
The striking cylindrical glass jar is beautifully patterned with geometric blocks, caning, and crosshatched details that catch the light wonderfully. Its vivid electric blue color makes this example especially eye-catching and highly decorative.
The ornate metal stand features intricate floral and scrollwork decoration, an arched handle with pierced detailing, decorative feet, and a coordinating removable lid with finial. The castor is remarkably complete and retains its original serving utensils, which hang neatly from the side of the frame.
Victorian pickle castors were designed to hold pickles, olives, relishes, and other condiments and were often displayed prominently on the dining table. By the late 1800s, elaborate examples such as this became as much decorative status pieces as functional serving ware.
A gorgeous and increasingly difficult-to-find example, particularly desirable for its vibrant blue glass, ornate frame, and completeness. Beautiful displayed in a Victorian interior, antique cabinet, or incorporated into an eclectic tablescape.
