French Sèvres Style Porcelain Jardinieres on Gilt Bronze Stands. Circa 1770
An exceptionally rare and elegant pair of French Sèvres porcelain jardinieres, richly adorned in the iconic turquoise bleu céleste colorway with hand painted pastoral scenes framed by delicate gilt decoration. Each piece rests upon ornate gilt bronze feet and features finely beaded ormolu rims, giving the pair an unmistakably aristocratic presence.
These jardinieres bear the interlaced double “L” Sèvres factory mark along with the date letter “R,” corresponding to the year 1770 during the reign of Louis XV. The Sèvres Porcelain Factory was originally founded in 1738 at the Château de Vincennes before relocating to Sèvres in 1756, where it quickly became one of the most celebrated porcelain manufactories in Europe. By 1759, King Louis XV himself assumed ownership of the factory, commissioning pieces almost exclusively for royalty, nobility, and the French elite.
True Sèvres porcelain became synonymous with luxury during the 18th century, prized for its luminous glaze, extraordinary hand painting, and unmatched craftsmanship. Pieces produced during this period were not ordinary decorative objects, but symbols of status and refinement found within royal residences and grand European interiors.
Each jardiniere in this pair features beautifully hand painted figural scenes framed in elaborate gilt scrollwork against the vibrant turquoise ground. The combination of porcelain and gilt bronze mounts creates the quintessential French Rococo aesthetic that collectors continue to seek centuries later.
Measures approximately 3 1/4” diameter and 4” high.
