Fenton Brothers Sheffield Mechanical Folding Biscuit Box c. 1880

An extraordinary example of late Victorian craftsmanship, this Antique Mechanical Folding Biscuit Box was crafted by Fenton Brothers & Co. of Sheffield, England around 1880. Featuring the highly sought-after Staniforth Patent shell design, this ingenious serving piece was once the centerpiece of elegant English afternoon tea, where it kept biscuits neatly displayed while adding a touch of theatrical charm to the table.

Richly decorated with chased floral scrollwork, bright-cut engraving, and a beautifully cast frame, the shell-shaped box opens with its original mechanical spring action. Simply turn the side key-screws and the two shell halves gracefully fold open to reveal the serving compartment inside. The silver plate retains a wonderful antique luster with crisp detailing throughout, making this both a functional serving piece and an exceptional display item.

The mechanism operates smoothly as intended. One small structural screw is missing from the lower frame, though this does not affect the stability, display, or operation of the piece. The frame bears the original Fenton Brothers & Co. Sheffield pseudo-hallmarks.
