19th Century French Palais Royal Mother-of-Pearl Mechanical Perfume Caddy

$1,150.00
The catalog card

An extraordinary 19th-century French Palais Royal mechanical perfume caddy, beautifully crafted from luminous mother-of-pearl shells and ornate gilt brass. A remarkable example of the luxurious vanity accessories fashionable in 1800s France, this exquisite piece combines intricate craftsmanship with an enchanting mechanical design.

When closed, the curved mother-of-pearl panels form an elegant globe-shaped casket, framed by delicate gilt brass ribs and crowned with a decorative foliage finial. The central stem operates a clever mechanical opening system, allowing the shell panels to unfold like flower petals and reveal four beautifully faceted glass perfume bottles nestled within an elaborate gilt brass gallery.

Each perfume bottle features a silver-toned hinged metal lid with its original-style clear glass stopper. The interiors of the mother-of-pearl panels are beautifully finished with delicate pinkish-red decorative trim, adding another layer of refinement to this already exceptional piece. The caddy rests upon an ornate gilt brass pedestal with scrolling details and rounded accents.

The Palais Royal district of Paris was celebrated during the 19th century for its fashionable boutiques and luxurious decorative objects, particularly exquisite mother-of-pearl vanity accessories and perfume necessaires. Pieces such as this were designed to be as beautiful on display as they were functional.

A truly spectacular collector’s piece, this mechanical perfume caddy is a miniature work of art and an extraordinary addition to an antique vanity collection.
